Cliff House, Felixstowe

Dating from 1906 and originally constructed as a prestigious 100 room cliffside hotel, Cliff House sits in a conservation area. Due to permitted development rights, the restoration needed to remain as sympathetic as possible to the former property in order to retain the building’s original features including the original sash windows.

Project Summary

Project Details

Mercury Glazing manufactured and supplied 204 windows for the sympathetic landmark refurbishment of Cliff House, a former iconic hotel in Felixstowe, into 24 one and two-bedroom luxury seaside apartments. The twelve-month project involved the manufacture and supply of 204 bespoke windows which included a mixture of arched top vertical sliders, bowed vertical sliders, circular windows and standard vertical sliders.

Paul Whyman of Dragon Wood Homes

Due to the age of the building and differing window styles needed, we needed to work with a fabrication partner who could deliver the bespoke energy-efficient windows needed while achieving the right balance from a conservation point of view. Mercury Glazing are an established specialist fabricator and as such, their products combined with the cutting-edge technology delivered by Spectus more that met these exacting standards.  The quality of the products was superb and we are delighted with the overall high-quality result.

Replacement of 54 windows, including 14 arched windows as part of a prestigious refurbishment project at Foxhill House, Chester. Foxhill House is a substantial Italianate house originally built for the Archdeacon of Chester. It is set in 70 acres of Cheshire woodland, which incorporates an arboretum containing several species of rare plants and trees. In the 1960s Foxhill House became a diocesan retreat and conference centre and it will mark 50 years as Chester Diocesan Retreat House in July 2019.

Project Summary

Manufacturer: Mercury Glazing Supplies, Gloucester
Installer: Droylsden Glass, Manchester
Location: Foxhill House, Chester

Project Details

Mercury Glazing manufactured and supplied 54 Spectus white vertical sliding windows with through horn detailing, including 14 arched vertical sliders. The new vertical sliders were chosen to replace ageing timber sliding sash windows, that were single glaze and not as thermally efficient as they could be.

The decision was made to upgrade the windows, replacing them with architecturally sensitive double-glazed versions. The Spectus Vertical Slider was quickly identified as the window that would deliver the solution required. In this case, the windows were manufactured in white with run through horns to replicate the heritage aesthetics and enhance the building’s appearance. Installation of the 54 vertical sliders including 14 arches took three weeks, with works carefully planned to minimise disruption to the day-to-day activities of the centre.

Project Details

Mercury Glazing manufactured and supplied over 250 PVC-u Vertical Sliding windows as part of the refurbishment programme. With over 250 windows needing to be installed, the installation programme needed to be carefully planned to minimise disruption to students living in the flats.

The authentic heritage appearance of the Vertical Sliders met all the aesthetic and weather performance requirements of both the University of Sussex and conservation officers at Brighton & Hove City Council.

Secured by Design accreditation was an important factor, as was thermal efficiency. Solar shading glass was also specified to protect the accommodation from the full glare of the sun. As a Secured by Design-accredited fabricator, Mercury Glazing was able to deliver windows that would meet all elements of the project. The finished result has transformed the exterior of the flats and mean they once more take pride of place on the seafront.
