These can be long, drawn-out processes, so getting them done in the early stages of your design is advisable – you don’t want to find out that one part needs changing later on.

Structure and Interior Design

Layout

The way a building is structured can have a major effect on what the space can be used for. Often, commercial properties have more than one business in them, and just as often the ones they do have change, so the utility of a building should be high on the priority list. Does the layout accommodate a wide range of uses? Can aspects be easily changed if the needs of the space shift?

Things change fast. For those of us who have spent large parts of the summer worrying about the levels of heat and the scarcity of the rain, it hardly seems possible that just a couple of months later we are faced with the kind of winter we have ahead of us. But here we are, and with October looming over our collective consciousness, when a typical household will need to find an average of £3,549 a year to cover their energy bills – capped at £2,500 for 2 years via the Energy Price Guarantee, but still – every little saving we can make now will pay dividends once the increase begins to take hold. Fortunately, there is plenty we can do to make a difference, most of which can be applied without too much of an adjustment to our lives or investment of the very thing that we are trying to look after: our money. Here, we will take a quick look at 5 things you can do today to mitigate some of the pressures of the colder seasons ahead.

Plug the Leak: Windows and Doors

All homes lose heat; finding the spots most susceptible to this fact should therefore be fairly high on the priority list when it comes to thinking about reducing the load of our energy bills. Obviously, each house is different, but there are useful rules of thumb to bear in mind if an investment is something your considering.

As a rough guide to the average household’s insulation performance, it is said that:

35% of its heat is lost through the walls
25% is lost through the roof
15% escapes through the doors, the same goes for the floor
10% goes through the windows

So, with those numbers it is easy to see where any home might benefit from an investment. The most effective ways to increase insulation are fairly clear, but they happen to be by far the most expensive areas of concern, too (let alone the most disruptive). This is why an upgrade to windows and doors is so commonly recommended: the same efficacy as re-insulating your roof, but at a fraction of the cost and inconvenience.

Thermostat: £80 at the Turn of a Dial

According to a recent Uswitch study, almost 2/3 of UK households (around 17 million homes) set their thermostat at 20°C and 10% have it at 25°C or above – at the time of writing, warmer than it is in Rome or Barcelona. The Committee on Climate Change recommends a setting of 19°C for heating homes; Uswitch has revealed that if the 17.7 million households who currently set their thermostats at 20°C were to reduce their heating by just that single degree, it would amount to a saving of £80 a year per dwelling, a combined annual saving of £1.4 billion.

Vanquishing the Energy Vampires

Take a seat, this one hurts. By the term energy vampires, we are referring to everything that is plugged in at the wall, eating away at your finances whether you’re using them or not. Laptops, phone chargers and televisions all fit the description. Experts vary in their estimates of the savings, but the figures invariably reach into the hundreds, just for switching gadgets off at the wall when we’re not using them: a fairly sensible choice then.

Radiators

Just like the circulatory system of the human body, radiators are a vital part of keeping a home warm and costly when they don’t work to their capacity. Luckily, checking to see that they’re working properly is as simple as putting your hand on them and diagnosing the problem is often not much more complicated.

Begin by turning the heating on and having all the radiators running hot. Once the system has had long enough to reach temperature, go from room to room and check that every radiator has warmed up evenly. If every part of each is hot – from top to bottom – then they are working as they should; if there are any cold spots then you have issues. Where these cold spots are located will often give a clue as to the nature of the problem. Here’s a quick run through of the things to look out for:

Radiator has cold pockets along the top but is otherwise warm: air pockets can build in the system, meaning the water inside the radiator can’t evenly heat up the unit. Air pockets rise in water, so the cold spots will be located at the top of the radiator. Bleeding the system should solve the problem.
Radiator is hot at the top but cold at the bottom: sediment deposits can build up over time and find their way into radiators, where it tends to settle to form a sludge-like barrier to the circulation of water in the system. Radiators will need to be flushed to bring them back to full functionality.
Radiators are warm upstairs but cold downstairs: extended periods of being switched off can cause problems with your central heating pump. Commonly an issue after the warmer summer months. Sometimes, simply tapping the pump gently with a mallet or hammer can kick-start it, otherwise a qualified engineer will know what’s needed.
Radiators are warm downstairs but cold upstairs: likely a blockage in the ball valve or a lack of water in the feed. Again, qualified assistance would be the best bet here.

Make the Switch

According to research conducted by the government in 2016, based on Ofgem’s ‘typical domestic consumption’ household annual usage, 14 million households could make a saving of at least £200 just by switching to the best deal on the market. With the energy sector’s profits so heavily concentrated on in the news, it would be hard to see that trend changing anytime soon.

There’s no getting around the fact that this winter will see a great many changes made by most of us in an effort to reduce the weight of the cost of living crisis we are about to live through. When we think about sustainability and our use of the planet’s finite resources, it is noticeable how seldom metals get a look in. With an image so heavily tied up with industry and pollution, it’s maybe no surprise, but amongst these materials is one that punches well above its weight in almost every regard: aluminium. It makes up a whopping 8% of the Earth’s core mass – making it the most widespread metal in the world and the third most abundant chemical element after oxygen and silicon; it is infinitely and easily recycled; has a lower carbon footprint than many of its closest competitors (both in its construction and its use) and more than holds its own against its nearest equivalents when it comes to its structural properties. So, you may be thinking that the argument borders on common sense, but it doesn’t stop there: once we take a closer look at what it offers up against its rivals in the industry, we begin to notice that the case for using aluminium just gets stronger.

The Lay of the Land – Where the Industry is Today

Before we can get a full picture of the benefits of using aluminium, it’s useful to have an idea of the problems facing the construction industry today, specifically with regards to its sustainability credentials and carbon footprint. From there we can see where there is room for improvement, and where the alternatives provide them. The UK Green Building Council has stated that the built environment accounts for nearly 50% of C02 emissions produced by the UK. This includes not only the construction but the maintenance and operating costs, too. So, let’s take a quick look at where we stand today and the problems facing the industry’s transition to a greener model.

Concrete – The cause of 8% of global emissions – almost triple the aviation sector. Moreover, for every tonne of concrete used, 134.8kg of C02 is released into the atmosphere.
Steel – Double the amount of C02 is released compared to the quantity of steel produced. So, for every tonne of steel, that’s 2 tonnes of C02.
Timber – 80,000 acres are lost every single day to deforestation.
Cement – In order for the cement industry to meet the Paris Climate Agreement, it must reduce emissions by 16% by 2030.
Waste – A staggering one quarter of all the materials used in construction each year are wasted; 13% just get sent directly to landfill sites.

When you see numbers like that, it’s easy to see why there is so much pressure for the industry to find more viable options. Of course, nothing in this world is free – either financially or with regards to its environmental impact – but it’s certainly also true that some things are more costly than others. If we take a look at aluminium, it’s hard to argue with those who feel that not using it is all too often an opportunity missed.

Illuminating Aluminium: Key Features

Habitat Rehabilitation

Aluminium is created from bauxite ore, a process which takes place from sites across the globe. A survey in 2002 found that 83% of the mined areas around the world concerned with bauxite ore were rehabilitated after use and that 97% of bauxite operations had rehabilitation strategies in place. There is no method possible of pulling things out of the ground without having a detrimental effect on the surrounding habitat, so it’s vitally important for sites of heavy industry to have something in place to return the habitat to its original state once the operations have ceased.

Lightweight

Steel may be the stronger of the two metals but aluminium has a much better strength-to-weight ratio. There is a rule of thumb in the boat-building trade that states aluminium is roughly half the strength of steel and about a third of its weight. This attribute has obvious advantages when applied to the construction industry.

Corrosion Resistance

There is a good functional reason for aluminium being used on so many exteriors of buildings these days: in most environments, aluminium alloys are incredibly resistant to all kinds of weather conditions and are excellent at corrosion resistance. Another good place to see this in action is its proliferation in the fizzy-drink can market.

Strength

Some aluminium alloys are also considered high strength, even compared with steel. This, in conjunction with its durability, makes it the ideal candidate for a huge number of tasks where strength and longevity are decisive factors. Its strength also gives building designers flexibility when it comes to floor-planning.

Recyclable

Aluminium can be recycled infinitely, while maintaining the same structural performance. This benefit is two-fold, as it saves on the amounts of raw materials needed to begin with whilst also massively reducing the carbon used for its preparation – for every tonne of aluminium recycled, 9 tonnes of C02 emissions are saved.

Non-flammable

According to BS 476, the regulation pertaining to the fire resistance of different elements of construction, aluminium has been designated non-combustible: after prolonged exposure to fire or extreme heat, the metal will start to melt – not burn – after reaching its melting point.

Building Ratings Potential – Making the Grade

When a material’s environmental status is being considered, factors including the type of energy used in the extraction process and the availability of recycled components are all taken into account. While there are certain differences that are important to bear in mind when choosing between the two – which we will touch upon a little later – there are also several gains

Choice

Most companies offer both bi-fold and sliding doors in a variety of materials, such as wood, UPVC and aluminium. Things like the size of the panes make a difference as to recommended materials, so it’s always worth asking for the advice of your building contractor before making a decision.

Strength

The frames are required to be strong enough to support large panes of glass, which are themselves usually tempered, toughened or laminated. The material you use will determine its required mass, which is why aluminium is often preferred to wood or vinyl.

Maintenance

As opposed to traditional window units which are usually made up of several smaller panes– let alone the fiddly frames in between – each of the folding or sliding panels consists of only one frame and one pane of glass, making the task of cleaning them a lot less time-consuming.

Bringing the Outside In

What’s not to like about being able to enjoy the comforts of being indoors whilst admiring the view of your outside environment? Whether it’s taking shelter from the unpleasant weather or getting shade from the sun, the benefits of having a more seamless transition from outside to in are considerable.

Resale Value

According to some industry experts, the addition of bi-fold or sliding doors to a property can increase its resale value by 5-10 per cent. If you were thinking of selling your home soon, or had plans for a redevelopment project, it could be that this increase in value could more than recuperate the cost of having them fitted.

Differences Between Sliding and Bi-fold Doors

As mentioned above, there are several key differences between the two and making a choice will very much depend on personal preference and the attributes that are more important to you. The most common and distinctive of these differences are:

Aesthetics

One of the most significant variables between sliding and bi-fold doors is their glass-to-frame ratio. While bi-folds can be opened more fully, when closed they have significantly more vertical frame visible than sliding doors. In warmer climates, where the average daytime temperatures are sufficient to have the doors open regularly, this aspect of its performance might not be quite so important, but the reality of the British seasons makes it a central question. Put simply: sliding doors may be a better option if maximum natural light and wider views of your garden throughout the year are the priorities.

Space Requirements

Sliding doors tend to be made of two or more panes of glass which, when opened, slide sideways to the end of the frame, running parallel to its original position. Bi-folds, on the other hand, fold back against themselves – like a concertina – and run along a track on the floor or ceiling or both. This means that a sliding door doesn’t project outwards when opened, as opposed to the bi-fold, which requires space for the panels to be stacked into, at a right angle to its original position.

Threshold

Bi-fold doors can be fitted flush to your floor whereas sliding equivalents will often require a frame you will need to step over to go from indoors to outdoors. While to many a slight obstacle might not be a deal-breaker, there are contexts in which the height of the threshold can become a more pressing concern, such as ease-of-access for the very young and the elderly and those who require the use of a wheelchair.

Cost

The difference in cost is minimal unless the doors get very wide. If the space is a big one, sliding doors can become significantly more expensive due to the high cost of large single units of glass.

Energy Rating

Sliding doors tend to be the more thermally efficient and the reason for this is twofold. Glass is the strong point of any door and the frame is the weak point – thermally-speaking – therefore the higher glass-to-frame ratio of the sliding doors makes them more efficient, coupled with the fact that their profile is usually thicker, too.

In and Out Access

Bi-fold doors very often have a traffic door – a panel which can be opened like a normal back door – meaning you are able to quickly nip in and out without having to slide a cumbersome pane along a frame. Sliding doors do not have this feature due to the fixed nature of the panes

Ahead of the curve

When we came to market in 2002 as one of the first manufacturers of the Spectus Vertical Sliding window, we set out a clear business focus to deliver a viable alternative to timber sash windows. It’s fair to say the industry has come a long way since those early days, and our vertical slider remains the product most considered and accepted by planners and conservation officers due to its exceptional traditional styling that perfectly replicates its timber counterparts. What is interesting to note is the shift in demand for the sliding sash window in today’s modern homes, as the windows high-end characteristics mean they are more relevant than ever before. The broader appeal of the sliding sash window across modern properties is encouraging. Consumers and building contractors are now seeking traditional styling combined with modern-day thermal performance and an expansive colour palette. And while we are still seeing sliding sash window demand for heritage hues such as Cream and Chartwell Green, we have witnessed an industry shift for modern-contemporary colours such as Anthracite Grey or Black. As a business, Mercury has remained steadfast to the quality of our products and continues to meet our customers’ needs across all market sectors. To broaden our appeal and stay ahead of the curve, we expanded the business in 2008 and began manufacturing a range of cutting-edge aluminium products ahead of the market boom. Once again, it was a shrewd business move and one that allowed us to capitalise on the aluminium upturn across all market sectors. As we celebrate this milestone year, the business has been through a lot in that time, but the past couple of years have easily been the most eventful.

The highs we’ve celebrated

Despite everything, the business has had an incredible two years of growth. Sales of our aluminium products saw a ten-fold increase along with a step-change in demand for our PVC-U vertical sliders. Feature-rich products are here to stay. Since day one, they’ve been our bread-and-butter and we’ve certainly reaped the rewards of the recent market boom.

Focusing on the future

We’re in the middle of a four-year plan for growth. We are laser-focused on achieving that while continuing to maintain the customer service levels, turnaround times and quality that we’ve built our name on. We are incredibly proud to have reached this milestone year and it’s humbling to see just how far we have come. Twenty years ago, we were a company of three people manufacturing one product – the Spectus PVC-U Vertical Slider. Today, we are a multi-million-pound turnover company of 60 people manufacturing a comprehensive range of specialist feature-rich products in both PVC-U and aluminium. It has been quite a journey but one we couldn’t have done without the support of our customers or our talented team. The design is a striking top choice, consisting of four panels with no glass. Across 2021, front doors with no glass panels have seen the largest rise in interest, with four of the styles omitting glass for increased privacy.

With many people spending more time working from home and within the same four walls through 2021, research shows a shift away from open plan living, with dedicated spaces for work and other activities starting to trend. This partitioning of space for separate activities could be influencing door design choices – the popularity of private closed spaces mirrors the increasing interest in private, solid door designs.

If you’re looking for more privacy but want more light to enter your hallway, the second most popular choice, the Oxford, is a similar design to the Sherbourne, but with slimline horizontal glass panels incorporated into the design.

Climbing four places, the Oxford 2 door design has seen the largest increase in ranking of any door type in 2021. The style is very similar to top spot Sherbourne, but consists of five panels and no glass panels, rather than the Sherbourne’s four panels.

Cottage style doors enter the top ten for 2021

The Purton door design became one of the most popular doors ordered in 2021, entering the top ten for the first time. This style consists of a vertical, short rectangle glass panel with vertical grooves on the door.

This Cottage style joins the Traditional Victorian design, alongside eight Modern designs.

What are the UK’s favourite front door colours?

The team then broke down trends for front doors by colour specified, to reveal the most popular colours of the past year.

Anthracite Grey is the most popular colour

Overall, the most popular colour is Anthracite Grey. This solid, deep grey, appears black in certain lights, but is slightly softer.

Dark hues of grey have become increasingly fashionable in recent years, with dark grey radiators, kitchen cupboards, and feature walls springing up in place of lighter creams and whites that have dominated interior trends for decades.

Greys dominate the top ten

Six of the top colours for 2021 are grey, with other greys in the top ten including Textured Anthracite, Antique Grey, Black Grey, Anthracite Grey, and Slate Grey.

Black front doors take second place

Following on from a huge selection of greys in the top ten is black. Black was placed second, followed by Obsidian Black at number six, and Textured Black taking tenth.

These colours are a similar hue, but Obsidian presents a slight metallic gloss.

The colour black is a fantastic statement for your front door, which accents the front of the property and draws your eye to it. The popularity of this colour is likely down to its adaptability. The categories include Bifold Door Manufacturer, Fabricator/Manufacturer and Vertical Sliding Window Company. The National Fenestration Awards are the industry’s fastest growing, independent awards event.
