Why Aluminium is the Future of
Eco-friendly Construction.

When we think about sustainability and our use of the planet’s finite resources, it is noticeable how seldom metals get a look in. With an image so heavily tied up with industry and pollution, it’s maybe no surprise, but amongst these materials is one that punches well above its weight in almost every regard: aluminium. It makes up a whopping 8% of the Earth’s core mass – making it the most widespread metal in the world and the third most abundant chemical element after oxygen and silicon; it is infinitely and easily recycled; has a lower carbon footprint than many of its closest competitors (both in its construction and its use) and more than holds its own against its nearest equivalents when it comes to its structural properties. So, you may be thinking that the argument borders on common sense, but it doesn’t stop there: once we take a closer look at what it offers up against its rivals in the industry, we begin to notice that the case for using aluminium just gets stronger.

The Lay of the Land – Where the Industry is Today

Before we can get a full picture of the benefits of using aluminium, it’s useful to have an idea of the problems facing the construction industry today, specifically with regards to its sustainability credentials and carbon footprint. From there we can see where there is room for improvement, and where the alternatives provide them. The UK Green Building Council has stated that the built environment accounts for nearly 50% of C02 emissions produced by the UK. This includes not only the construction but the maintenance and operating costs, too. So, let’s take a quick look at where we stand today and the problems facing the industry’s transition to a greener model.

  • Concrete – The cause of 8% of global emissions – almost triple the aviation sector. Moreover, for every tonne of concrete used, 134.8kg of C02 is released into the atmosphere.
  • Steel – Double the amount of C02 is released compared to the quantity of steel produced. So, for every tonne of steel, that’s 2 tonnes of C02.
  • Timber – 80,000 acres are lost every single day to deforestation.
  • Cement – In order for the cement industry to meet the Paris Climate Agreement, it must reduce emissions by 16% by 2030.
  • Waste – A staggering one quarter of all the materials used in construction each year are wasted; 13% just get sent directly to landfill sites.
When you see numbers like that, it’s easy to see why there is so much pressure for the industry to find more viable options. Of course, nothing in this world is free – either financially or with regards to its environmental impact – but it’s certainly also true that some things are more costly than others. If we take a look at aluminium, it’s hard to argue with those who feel that not using it is all too often an opportunity missed.

Illuminating Aluminium: Key Features

Habitat Rehabilitation

Aluminium is created from bauxite ore, a process which takes place from sites across the globe. A survey in 2002 found that 83% of the mined areas around the world concerned with bauxite ore were rehabilitated after use and that 97% of bauxite operations had rehabilitation strategies in place. There is no method possible of pulling things out of the ground without having a detrimental effect on the surrounding habitat, so it’s vitally important for sites of heavy industry to have something in place to return the habitat to its original state once the operations have ceased.

Lightweight

Steel may be the stronger of the two metals but aluminium has a much better strength-to-weight ratio. There is a rule of thumb in the boat-building trade that states aluminium is roughly half the strength of steel and about a third of its weight. This attribute has obvious advantages when applied to the construction industry.

Corrosion Resistance

There is a good functional reason for aluminium being used on so many exteriors of buildings these days: in most environments, aluminium alloys are incredibly resistant to all kinds of weather conditions and are excellent at corrosion resistance. Another good place to see this in action is its proliferation in the fizzy-drink can market.

Strength

Some aluminium alloys are also considered high strength, even compared with steel.  This, in conjunction with its durability, makes it the ideal candidate for a huge number of tasks where strength and longevity are decisive factors. Its strength also gives building designers flexibility when it comes to floor-planning.

Recyclable

Aluminium can be recycled infinitely, while maintaining the same structural performance. This benefit is two-fold, as it saves on the amounts of raw materials needed to begin with whilst also massively reducing the carbon used for its preparation – for every tonne of aluminium recycled, 9 tonnes of C02 emissions are saved.

Non-flammable

According to BS 476, the regulation pertaining to the fire resistance of different elements of construction, aluminium has been designated non-combustible: after prolonged exposure to fire or extreme heat, the metal will start to melt – not burn – after reaching its melting point.

Building Ratings Potential – Making the Grade

When a material’s environmental status is being considered, factors including the type of energy used in the extraction process and the availability of recycled components are all taken into account. Using aluminium systems in the construction of new buildings or the renovation of existing ones can improve building ratings in a number of ways. These include:

Thermal control

Daylight optimisation

Renewable energy production

Energy performance

Acoustics

Raw and recycled material sourcing

The Climate Alloy Ally

Making any choice is the same: you weigh up the positives; consider the negatives and come to a conclusion.  No use of a resource will ever come without its correlative negative impact – a truth that is becoming more relevant with each passing day – and so the task ahead of us is to decide which material’s benefits outweigh the damage they cause.  When viewed along these lines – and it may well be that the time for that perspective is now – it is hard to see why aluminium isn’t a permanent fixture to the conversation.

Tips for introducing more
natural light into your home

Ideas for Getting More Natural Light into the Home

Optimising the amount of daylight that enters a room is a key consideration for any indoor space, wherever you are, but there are places – like here in the UK – where the issue is perhaps felt more keenly than others. It not only makes a room feel brighter, more open and welcoming, but it can also improve mental health by increasing the flow of the hormone serotonin to your brain. Today, the twin pressures of resource efficiency and the reality of the British climate make it important to find a way to maximise the light that is there without compromising a home’s aesthetics or its energy performance. Luckily, there are plenty of things you can do to achieve this. One of the more popular and effective solutions is the use of sliding or bi-fold doors. Variations can be found in the architectural histories of several cultures dating as far back as the first century CE, according to archaeological sites in ancient Pompeii. So, the concept is nothing new, but thanks to innovations in design and technology and advancements in our use of materials, we are able to make use of a time-honoured method in a contemporary and sustainable way. If you think sliding or bi-fold doors have a place in your future development plans, read on for a breakdown of the key benefits and differences.

Benefits of Bi-fold and Sliding Doors

While there are certain differences that are important to bear in mind when choosing between the two – which we will touch upon a little later – there are also several gains
common to both:

Choice

Most companies offer both bi-fold and sliding doors in a variety of materials, such as wood, UPVC and aluminium. Things like the size of the panes make a difference as to recommended materials, so it’s always worth asking for the advice of your building contractor before making a decision.

Strength

The frames are required to be strong enough to support large panes of glass, which are themselves usually tempered, toughened or laminated. The material you use will determine its required mass, which is why aluminium is often preferred to wood or vinyl.

Maintenance

As opposed to traditional window units which are usually made up of several smaller panes– let alone the fiddly frames in between – each of the folding or sliding panels consists of only one frame and one pane of glass, making the task of cleaning them a lot less time-consuming.

Bringing the Outside In

What’s not to like about being able to enjoy the comforts of being indoors whilst admiring the view of your outside environment? Whether it’s taking shelter from the unpleasant weather or getting shade from the sun, the benefits of having a more seamless transition from outside to in are considerable.

Resale Value

According to some industry experts, the addition of bi-fold or sliding doors to a property can increase its resale value by 5-10 per cent. If you were thinking of selling your home soon, or had plans for a redevelopment project, it could be that this increase in value could more than recuperate the cost of having them fitted.

Differences Between Sliding and Bi-fold Doors

As mentioned above, there are several key differences between the two and making a choice will very much depend on personal preference and the attributes that are more important to you. The most common and distinctive of these differences are:

Aesthetics

One of the most significant variables between sliding and bi-fold doors is their glass-to-frame ratio. While bi-folds can be opened more fully, when closed they have significantly more vertical frame visible than sliding doors. In warmer climates, where the average daytime temperatures are sufficient to have the doors open regularly, this aspect of its performance might not be quite so important, but the reality of the British seasons makes it a central question. Put simply: sliding doors may be a better option if maximum natural light and wider views of your garden throughout the year are the priorities.

Space Requirements

Sliding doors tend to be made of two or more panes of glass which, when opened, slide sideways to the end of the frame, running parallel to its original position. Bi-folds, on the other hand, fold back against themselves – like a concertina – and run along a track on the floor or ceiling or both. This means that a sliding door doesn’t project outwards when opened, as opposed to the bi-fold, which requires space for the panels to be stacked into, at a right angle to its original position.

Threshold

Bi-fold doors can be fitted flush to your floor whereas sliding equivalents will often require a frame you will need to step over to go from indoors to outdoors. While to many a slight obstacle might not be a deal-breaker, there are contexts in which the height of the threshold can become a more pressing concern, such as ease-of-access for the very young and the elderly and those who require the use of a wheelchair.

Cost

The difference in cost is minimal unless the doors get very wide. If the space is a big one, sliding doors can become significantly more expensive due to the high cost of large single units of glass.

Energy Rating

Sliding doors tend to be the more thermally efficient and the reason for this is twofold. Glass is the strong point of any door and the frame is the weak point – thermally-speaking – therefore the higher glass-to-frame ratio of the sliding doors makes them more efficient, coupled with the fact that their profile is usually thicker, too.

In and Out Access

Bi-fold doors very often have a traffic door – a panel which can be opened like a normal back door – meaning you are able to quickly nip in and out without having to slide a cumbersome pane along a frame. Sliding doors do not have this feature due to the fixed nature of the panes

A Question of Preference

As with so many things in life, the type you choose will depend on the things you hold most dear. Armed with the benefits and limitations of each, you can be better placed to make a decision that best suits your needs.

20th Anniversary For Mercury Glazing

July 2022 marks the 20th year in business for specialist trade fabricator Mercury Glazing Supplies. Director and Co-founder Martin Halford, take a look back at the journey that has made Mercury the go-to fabricator for vertical sliding sash windows and cutting-edge aluminium products.

Ahead of the curve

When we came to market in 2002 as one of the first manufacturers of the Spectus Vertical Sliding window, we set out a clear business focus to deliver a viable alternative to timber sash windows. It’s fair to say the industry has come a long way since those early days, and our vertical slider remains the product most considered and accepted by planners and conservation officers due to its exceptional traditional styling that perfectly replicates its timber counterparts. What is interesting to note is the shift in demand for the sliding sash window in today’s modern homes, as the windows high-end characteristics mean they are more relevant than ever before. The broader appeal of the sliding sash window across modern properties is encouraging. Consumers and building contractors are now seeking traditional styling combined with modern-day thermal performance and an expansive colour palette. And while we are still seeing sliding sash window demand for heritage hues such as Cream and Chartwell Green, we have witnessed an industry shift for modern-contemporary colours such as Anthracite Grey or Black. As a business, Mercury has remained steadfast to the quality of our products and continues to meet our customers’ needs across all market sectors. To broaden our appeal and stay ahead of the curve, we expanded the business in 2008 and began manufacturing a range of cutting-edge aluminium products ahead of the market boom. Once again, it was a shrewd business move and one that allowed us to capitalise on the aluminium upturn across all market sectors. As we celebrate this milestone year, the business has been through a lot in that time, but the past couple of years have easily been the most eventful.

The highs we’ve celebrated

Despite everything, the business has had an incredible two years of growth. Sales of our aluminium products saw a ten-fold increase along with a step-change in demand for our PVC-U vertical sliders. Feature-rich products are here to stay. Since day one, they’ve been our bread-and-butter and we’ve certainly reaped the rewards of the recent market boom.

Whether it’s PVC-U or aluminium we’re experienced in offering specialist product solutions that help deliver the aspirational projects that homeowners demand and commercial and new build markets must deliver. Put simply, it helps to make us a very attractive fabrication partner. We’ve also invested in the future of the business. We recently opened a new dedicated aluminium manufacturing centre at our headquarters in Gloucester. It means we now have dedicated facilities for both our PVC-U and aluminium production.

As part of the expansion, we made a six-figure investment in automated machinery to ensure the quality is second-to-none across the board. We’ve also taken on new senior-level members of staff too and the Mercury family is now 60-strong and growing.

The go-to supplier of feature-rich, specialist glazing products

If you want specialist, feature-rich products, we’re the company you need, whether you work in trade, commercial or residential markets. And the depth and breadth of our portfolio is purposely designed to suit all applications. Our Smart Visofold Bifold series of doors has all the design, thermal efficiency and security benefits you would expect from a highly established product. Add in impressive opening apertures and low threshold options and you have a package that’s hard to beat. Our Cortizo Aluminium Bifolding Door has up to seven leaves each way (14 in total), comes in a wealth of options and has all the durability and reliability bifold doors need. It offers an exciting solution for time-sensitive or budget-conscious projects too.

Our Visoglide Plus Aluminium Patio Door offers contemporary styling, robust performance and superior thermal performance. And with the ability to accommodate larger apertures, it delivers on consumer trends for wide glass expanses too.

Our Alitherm 300 Aluminium Window combines modern energy-efficient technology with the elegant and understated style of a traditional casement window.

Our Alitherm Heritage 47 Aluminium Window has been engineered specifically to replace existing steel windows without compromising on modern-day performance.

Our aluminium sash windows have been engineered to combine the traditional aesthetics of classic British architecture with modern convenience. Alongside these, we offer aluminium doors and windows for commercial projects as well as aluminium lantern lights and roof lights and Smarts aluminium designer doors. And with new aluminium products due to be launched soon, the Mercury portfolio of specialist products continues to grow.

We also remain one of the UK’s largest fabricators of the PVC-U Spectus Vertical Slider. We offer both welded and mechanical jointed options, delivering the best in Vertical Slider choice.

Focusing on the future

We’re in the middle of a four-year plan for growth. We are laser-focused on achieving that while continuing to maintain the customer service levels, turnaround times and quality that we’ve built our name on. We are incredibly proud to have reached this milestone year and it’s humbling to see just how far we have come. Twenty years ago, we were a company of three people manufacturing one product – the Spectus PVC-U Vertical Slider. Today, we are a multi-million-pound turnover company of 60 people manufacturing a comprehensive range of specialist feature-rich products in both PVC-U and aluminium. It has been quite a journey but one we couldn’t have done without the support of our customers or our talented team. We’re now looking forward to seeing what the next 20 years bring for Mercury as we continue on our growth trajectory.

The Most Popular Doors for 2022

As the first thing you interact with when entering a house, the front door makes one of the largest first impressions about a property. A change of colour or styling can make a huge change to the appearance and appeal of a property.

So, to help homeowners looking to renovate in 2022, Mercury Glazing Supplies Ltd has revealed the most popular front door styles and colours from the past year.

The Most Popular Styles of Door

Mercury discusses the most popular door designs from 2021 that demonstrate the latest trends in entrance doors.

The Modern Sherbourne design is the most popular style for 2021

The Sherbourne design is the most in-demand entrance door of the past 12 months. This trend continues on from 2020, when it was also the most popular style.

The design is a striking top choice, consisting of four panels with no glass. Across 2021, front doors with no glass panels have seen the largest rise in interest, with four of the styles omitting glass for increased privacy.

With many people spending more time working from home and within the same four walls through 2021, research shows a shift away from open plan living, with dedicated spaces for work and other activities starting to trend. This partitioning of space for separate activities could be influencing door design choices – the popularity of private closed spaces mirrors the increasing interest in private, solid door designs.

If you’re looking for more privacy but want more light to enter your hallway, the second most popular choice, the Oxford, is a similar design to the Sherbourne, but with slimline horizontal glass panels incorporated into the design.

James Dean, spokesperson for Mercury said: “Throughout 2021 and entering 2022, we have seen designs such as the Sherbourne become increasingly popular.

“Solid front doors can offer a more sophisticated and modern exterior whilst providing an added sense of privacy.”

The Modern Oxford 2 has seen the largest increase in interest
Climbing four places, the Oxford 2 door design has seen the largest increase in ranking of any door type in 2021. The style is very similar to top spot Sherbourne, but consists of five panels and no glass panels, rather than the Sherbourne’s four panels.
Cottage style doors enter the top ten for 2021

The Purton door design became one of the most popular doors ordered in 2021, entering the top ten for the first time. This style consists of a vertical, short rectangle glass panel with vertical grooves on the door.

This Cottage style joins the Traditional Victorian design, alongside eight Modern designs.

What are the UK’s favourite front door colours?

The team then broke down trends for front doors by colour specified, to reveal the most popular colours of the past year.

Anthracite Grey is the most popular colour

Overall, the most popular colour is Anthracite Grey. This solid, deep grey, appears black in certain lights, but is slightly softer.

Dark hues of grey have become increasingly fashionable in recent years, with dark grey radiators, kitchen cupboards, and feature walls springing up in place of lighter creams and whites that have dominated interior trends for decades.

Greys dominate the top ten

Six of the top colours for 2021 are grey, with other greys in the top ten including Textured Anthracite, Antique Grey, Black Grey, Anthracite Grey, and Slate Grey.

Black front doors take second place

Following on from a huge selection of greys in the top ten is black. Black was placed second, followed by Obsidian Black at number six, and Textured Black taking tenth.

These colours are a similar hue, but Obsidian presents a slight metallic gloss.

The colour black is a fantastic statement for your front door, which accents the front of the property and draws your eye to it. The popularity of this colour is likely down to its adaptability. Black is a strong colour that gives a sense of power and luxury, but is also as neutral as white, so can be easily combined with existing colour schemes. One of the most notable black front doors in the UK is that of No.10 Downing Street.

Blue is the third most popular front door colour

Blue is the final colour to appear in the top ten, with Steel Blue taking ninth place overall. This shade is a metallic colour, taking inspiration from the blue hue that steel develops when treated. It has the same modern appearance as a grey or black, but with a splash of colour.

James Dean, spokesperson for Mercury continued: “Neutral colours such as greys and blacks can increase interest in your property if you ever come to sell it.

“These colours are often more appealing, being simplistic and modern. Brighter colours make a stronger statement, which is very personal to the individual. Some buyers may struggle to imagine themselves living in a property with a distinctive colour scheme.”

How have people been adding more character to their front doors through the year?

With brighter pastel and light colours missing from the top ten most popular colours, how have Brits been adding more flair to their front doors?

To see if people are adding more interest to their doors through different paint types, the team had a look at the different specifications chosen for the ten most popular colours.

Metallic and solid colours tie for first

Overall, popular opinion is split between these two paint types.

If you’re looking for a front door that utilises one of the top blacks or greys, but want to add a touch of extra shine to your door, consider a metallic paint. The added metal particles reflect light, creating more gloss and pop. However, if you’re looking to soften a darker hue, consider one of the solid colour options

James Dean, spokesperson for Mercury continued: “Changing your front door has a huge impact on the appearance of your property. Combined with new windows, your home can be transformed into a much more modern property or have a far more vintage and Victorian feel.”

Mercury rising in sliding door sales

Specialist fabricator Mercury Glazing has announced a tenfold increase in demand for its popular aluminium sliding doors. Martin Halford, Director at Mercury, explains: “As a specialist aluminium window and door fabricator we offer our customers the reassurance that they are working with an expert business when it comes to the manufacture of high-quality aluminium sliding doors. As the boom in the sliding door market continues, we’re becoming the obvious partner for installers and builders looking to tap into this growing market trend.”

Martin reports that the sales growth comes across the entire aluminium patio door range that the Gloucester-based business offers, including wide-span sliding doors.

Martin comments: “In the domestic sector, more and more consumers are discovering what sliding patio doors have to offer when it comes to the trend for big expanses of glass. The aluminium sliding patio door delivers on this trend better than any other option as the construction allows for wider glazed panels, up to 3000mm wide, and fewer vertical frames to break the view, which customers find appealing.”

The company manufactures the Cortizo 4700 aluminium patio door, which delivers superb energy efficiency and thermal retention with contemporary aesthetics at an attractive price point. Martin says: “Our aluminium patio doors are suitable for both commercial and residential projects and we have recently offered an introductory price of just £500.00 per pane, which is proving popular with customers.”

The aluminium patio doors are manufactured at Mercury’s new dedicated aluminium manufacturing centre in Gloucester. As with all Mercury’s products, the quality of their aluminium sliding doors is evident at every level. This includes stainless steel rails for trouble-free use, a 40mm slim interlock allowing more glass appearance, superb strength and weather residence and PAS24:2016 upgrade. And for customers tapping into the trend for colour, the aluminium sliding doors are available in a wide choice of single or dual colour options.

Since 2020, Mercury has doubled its turnover and remains well on track to meet its growth strategy over the next three years. Having opened their second bespoke manufacturing unit, the company has made a sizable six-figure investment in automated machinery and recruited several high-level appointments to their talented 60-strong team. And when it comes to delivering the products the market and their customers need, the tenfold sales growth shows the company clearly has its finger on the pulse.

Traditional Window Revival

As specialist fabricator Mercury Glazing enters their 20th year of manufacturing Vertical Sliding windows, Martin Halford Director of Mercury Glazing discusses why the continuing popularity of sliding sash windows is now part of a wider traditional window revival.

Sash windows have been the hallmark of British homes for centuries and evoke the elegance and period aesthetics like no other window choice. What was once the default window on heritage and architectural sensitive properties, has now become part of a much wider trend with consumers and developers embracing traditional design across modern properties too.

When we manufactured our first Spectus Vertical Sliding window back in 2002, the white casement window was pretty much the default option when it came to PVC-U products. On launch, the Spectus Vertical Sliding window was ahead of its time and was purposely designed to offer a viable PVC-U alternative to the traditional timber sash window. Fast forward twenty years and the Spectus PVC-U Vertical Slider is the product that most planners and conservation officers now readily accept as a true alternative to timber windows. But what’s interesting to note is the shift in demand into today’s modern homes as the window’s high-end characteristics mean it is more relevant than ever.

As one of the UK’s biggest fabricators of the Spectus Vertical Slider, manufacturing both the welded and mechanically joint versions, our experience in the industry combined with the volumes we fabricate means we have an excellent overview of the trends in the vertical slider market.

Even before lockdown one, we had witnessed a step change in demand for our vertical sliders in modern properties. But this demand has been accelerated with consumers having spent time researching their windows whilst investing in their homes. As a result, they have turned to feature-rich products with high-end detailing to deliver their aspirations.

The broader appeal of the vertical slider, especially in modern homes is encouraging. Consumers and contractors are still seeking traditional window styling with heritage detailing such as sash horns and soft heritage hues. But by removing the heritage detailing you can also produce a window that offers clean lines and adds immediate aesthetic value for modern properties too.

What’s interesting is the opportunities that projects like these present. New build, modern homes might be considered standard white casement window territory. But as this example shows, using our Vertical Slider offers a way to add greater value to a sale and satisfy consumers’ appetite for these window styles.

Despite the differences in the heritage and retail markets, they both have several features in common. These centre around the modern-day advantages our Vertical Sliders brings. Every Vertical Slider we fabricate has a U value of 1.3/m2K as standard. We see that self-builders, in particular, are interested in the thermal efficiency of the products they choose and the U values play an important part in their decision-making process. The ability of our Vertical Slider to deliver good looks and excellent thermal efficiency is a compelling proposition.

Security is an important consideration too. Our Vertical Sliders meet the requirements of PAS 24:2016 as standard and we also offer an option to upgrade to a Secured by Design version where security is paramount.

It isn’t just the products where our Vertical Sliders makes the difference. When you work with Mercury, you don’t just get high-quality products; you also get the experience of our dedicated internal team who will work with you throughout the buying process regardless of business size.

Since 2020 we have doubled our turnover and remain well on track to continue to meet our ambitious growth strategy over the next four-years. We recently opened a second manufacturing plant in Gloucester, have made a considerable six-figure investment in automation machinery from Haffner and recruited several high-level appointments to our talented team.

The Vertical Slider is and will always be considered a key product for the heritage sector, but the upturn in modern homes and the demand for traditional window appeal has never been stronger.

Get your foot in the door with Mercury

With the continued demand for aluminium bifolding and patio doors, Martin Halford, Director of specialist trade fabricator Mercury Specialist Frames Ltd, discusses the importance of choosing the right aluminium door products and supplier for installers looking to capitalise on the market opportunities.

The upturn in demand from the domestic sector for aluminium patio and bifolding doors has never been stronger. Due to the various lockdowns resulting from the pandemic, consumers have been forced to look closely at their homes and as a result, the growth in aspirational products such as aluminium bifolding and patio doors has rocketed.

The statistics supporting this upturn are astonishing – according to a survey by money.co.uk, between March and July last year, homeowners spent £55 billion on improvements – that’s an average of £4,035.70. And for any installer thinking this upturn in demand will slow down any time soon, they would be mistaken! A recent report confirmed that British households are planning to spend an average of £6,531 on transforming their homes in 2021.

These are unprecedented times for this industry, and with domestic installers currently having confirmed order books that reach well into the summer months, it has not been without its challenges.

We are all aware of escalating costs, product shortages and the pinch point on many businesses due to the rapid rise in demand. So, for any installer looking to offer aluminium door products in a saturated market, I would encourage you to look carefully when choosing a fabrication partner and ensure they have the credentials and credibility to support you.

As a longstanding and experienced aluminium trade fabricator, we focus on manufacturing high-end aluminium products to support our growing customer base whether they operate in the domestic, new build or commercial markets. With high customer retention, our customers return to us time and time again as we help them keep up with demand and maximise sales.

In the first instance, we have the capacity to keep our lead times competitive. Furthermore, we recently opened our second dedicated aluminium factory as part of our strategic growth plans and have invested heavily in automated machinery so we have the capacity and quality credentials to cope with high demand.

We have the experience too – we’ve been in business for nearly two decades and we pride ourselves on our quality manufacture and proactive service to customers.

We have invested in our people and in the last 12-months have made several key senior appointments to boost our internal teams and ultimately support our customers. As a prominent industry player, we have the ability to attract the best talent, so customers know they are getting superior support across all business areas.

And when it comes to aluminium products, we have kept our finger on the pulse when it comes to manufacturing the products that homeowners are seeking and installers need.

We fabricate two aluminium systems. Smart Aluminium Systems is the UK’s leading supplier of aluminium glazing systems and Cortizo is a European-giant systems house.

The Smart Visofold Bifold series of doors has all the design, thermal efficiency and security benefits you would expect from a highly established product. Add in impressive opening apertures and low threshold options and you have a package that’s hard to beat.

The Cortizo Aluminium Bifolding Door has up to seven leaves each way (14 in total), comes in a wealth of options and has all the durability and reliability bifold doors need. It offers an exciting solution for time-sensitive or budget-conscious projects too.

Finally, we have the Visoglide Plus Aluminium Patio Door, which offers contemporary styling, robust performance and superior thermal performance. And with the ability to accommodate larger apertures, it delivers on consumer trends for wide glass expanses too.

It’s fair to say that to support installers, the supply chain has to be agile and able to keep up with demand. At Mercury, we focus on our core competencies and have continued to invest in our business to help support our customers. With automated machinery running throughout our multi-manufacturing facilities, we can scale up or down our production as demand dictates.

So, if you are an installer who wants to work with an experienced and reliable aluminium specialist with the added assurance that they are working with a business that has the capacity, experience and commitment to quality, Mercury ticks all the boxes.
